A former Carlisle United goalkeeper will line up against his former club this weekend with Workington Reds.

Danny Grainger has drafted in teenager Lewis Boyd to train with Reds in pre-season.

And he plans to give former Blues youth team No1 Boyd an outing against Paul Simpson’s senior Carlisle side in Saturday’s pre-season friendly.

Boyd, who was released by United at the end of last season, has first-team experience through a loan spell at Carlisle City in 2022/23.

He is now hoping to impress Grainger ahead of Workington’s Northern Premier League Premier Division campaign.

“He will come into the team on Saturday,” said Grainger of Boyd.

“He’s trying to earn himself the opportunity to stay with us as well.

“He’s played the senior game already, trained last week with us and did really well.”

Grainger is looking at Boyd at a time his main two keepers, Jim Atkinson and Danny Eccles, are unavailable.

Atkinson is travelling until later in pre-season while Eccles suffered an injury in Reds’ recent friendly against Whitehaven.

The keeper shortage led Reds to use Carlisle United’s young pro Gabe Breeze in their friendly against Dumbarton last Saturday.

Grainger says Workington will continue to keep tabs on Breeze but said it would not have been fair to ask to use him against the Blues this weekend.

He said: “I spoke to Paul Simpson on Monday and we did get the green light to use Gabe again on Tuesday against Morecambe [a friendly that was then postponed with the visitors unable to raise a side].

“I haven’t asked the question about this weekend – playing against Carlisle is probably a situation that wouldn’t be great for Gabe or Carlisle.

“It was good to look at Gabe against Dumbarton – if anything happens down the line, he’s available for loan and we need a goalkeeper, it means I’ve had a look at him even though I already know a lot about him.”
