Danny Grainger has revealed the help he received from former Carlisle United star Paul Murray with Workington Reds’ latest signing.

The Borough Park club have brought in young Oldham Athletic winger Kofi Moore on a six-month loan.

And the 18-year-old was pointed in Reds’ direction by Murray, who recently returned to Oldham as their academy manager.

Moore could make his first Workington appearance against Carlisle in Saturday’s pre-season friendly.

Grainger spoke about how the deal came about.

“I actually phoned Muzza about another player but he said Kofi had quite a bit of interest and he’s one he thinks strongly about,” said the Workington manager.

“He’s played a few games in pre-season for Oldham and by all accounts done really well.

“Once we had a look at the videos, and had Muzza’s recommendation, we’ve been able to get the six-month deal done.

“It works for both parties – to get hm some game time, and for Oldham, they’ve got a recall option if they need to bring him back.”

Grainger says Moore will add pace to his newly-promoted squad as they prepare for life in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

“He’s a wide player, very direct and quick, which is something we probably lost last year with Reuben [Jerome] leaving,” added the Workington boss.

“We’ve got lots of players who like the ball at their feet but we also need players with that explosive speed which Kofi brings.

“I think he’ll excite the fans as well and he’ll be one who I’ll be excited to see develop over the next six months, and hopefully we can help him with his own pathway as well.

“He is up for training on Thursday night and all being well he’ll be in the squad on Saturday.”

Grainger is continuing to build his squad for the new campaign and is keen to add more new faces.

“We’re still looking at two more additions, hopefully one more loan signing and one more permanent signing just to see us over the line,” he said.

“We’ve had quite a few clubs contacting us this summer and, with us stepping up a level, it opens us to the loan market at different clubs.

“That’s a positive for us as well and is something we’ll explore.”

Workington’s fixtures for the new league season are out tomorrow at 2pm.
