Carlisle City boss Jim Nichols says he has been impressed with teenage Carlisle United loan keeper Lewis Boyd so far.

The 17-year-old youth player is on a work experience loan with the Northern League Division One side.

Boyd has already made several appearances for Nichols’ side, including a clean sheet in Tuesday’s Cumbrian derby with Penrith.

And the City manager said the young keeper looks a bright prospect.

“He’s done really well,” said Nichols.

“Kyle Townsley [City’s regular No1] was away, he went to watch England-Italy, and we were a little bit short.

“We rang Carlisle United and they’ve helped us out.

“He’s done well – he kicks well, talks well, looks really competent.

“He’s 17, and hasn’t played a lot of football, but he’s done well for us.”

Boyd’s next opportunity will come when sixth-placed City host Newcastle Benfield on Saturday.

Some of United’s other young loanees have been in midweek action, meanwhile.

Striker Sam Fishburn scored his second goal in successive games as Morpeth Town drew 1-1 with Bamber Bridge in Northern Premier League Premier Division.

The 18-year-old finished from close range to give the Highwaymen a 21st-minute lead, before the Lancashire visitors hit back in the second half.

Morpeth are next in action against Fishburn’s former loan club Lancaster City in the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Lewis Bell, meanwhile, returned to the Gretna 2008 side last night as they chalked up another victory.

Michael McIndoe’s resurgent side won 3-2 at Cumbernauld Colts to move up to 12th in the Lowland League table – a fifth successive win in all competitions.
