Has Taylor Charters returned just in time to have a major say in Carlisle United’s promotion destiny?

Having been sidelined since December, the Cumbrian is back – and made a bright substitute cameo in Sunday’s play-off first leg at Bradford City.

It was only the Maryport midfielder’s second appearance of 2023.

But his encouraging showing at Valley Parade could give Paul Simpson something to think about as he weighs up his second leg options.

Charters came on for Callum Guy in the 69th minute of the 1-0 defeat and was heavily involved in United’s late pressure.

The 21-year-old has missed plenty of football in recent times after suffering a hamstring injury in the December victory at Crewe Alexandra.

That came after he had enjoyed a positive run in the side – a spell which brought a memorable first Football League goal in the 3-3 draw at Harrogate Town.

Manager Simpson was pleased with what he saw from home-grown Charters at Bradford and said he added to a pleasing midfield showing overall.

“His first touch was a great touch, because it's come out to him and he's played it first time out to Jack Armer and he seemed to get real confidence from that,” Simpson said.

“I thought he did really well.

“I also thought Owen Moxon got on the ball and did well, I thought Alfie McCalmont showed great energy...

“I was really, really pleased with the midfield three.”
