Mark Hughes has warned against Bradford City getting carried away by their first-leg lead over Carlisle United.

The Bantams boss has stressed it is only half-time in a closely-contested play-off semi-final.

Jamie Walker’s Valley Parade strike sees the Bantams with the advantage ahead of Saturday’s second leg at Brunton Park.

Hughes is hoping they can see the job through after a night when he felt both sets of fans played a part in a memorable atmosphere.

"The crowd were fabulous, what an advert for League Two football with huge numbers,” said Hughes.

“Credit to Carlisle, they brought huge numbers as well.

“But they were drowned out totally by our fans and there was a real atmosphere and crackle right through the stadium throughout the night.

“I think everyone will have enjoyed it and the result is the important thing and that's what we take to Carlisle.

“It's only halfway – it's the old cliché and we have not done the job yet.”

Hughes said he was not surprised by the close nature of the game, the two previous meetings between Bradford and Carlisle having produced just one goal.

It points to another knife-edge occasion at United’s ground as Paul Simpson’s side try to fight back to keep their promotion hopes alive.

"It was an evenly matched game and we all thought that was going to be the case,” added Hughes.

“The league games would suggest that and those encounters were very close.

“In fairness, I thought we were excellent in the first half and really took the game to them and we were on the front foot, got it in good areas and got it out wide and caused them problems and scored a great goal.

“We tried to re-create that moment in training leading up to the game, working off Cooky [Andy Cook].”
