FC United Youth 0-2 Carlisle United Youth

Max Cowburn and Luke Lloyd were on the scoresheet as Carlisle United’s youngsters beat FC United 2-0 in the FA Youth Cup first round.

The Manchester-based hosts started well against Darren Edmondson’s Blues.

Kieron Olsen, who featured for United’s first-team in a friendly at Bradford earlier this season, was forced to give away an early corner, which ultimately came to nothing.

Carlisle’s first real shot on goal came in the 15th minute when Joe Breen fired wide.

Six minutes later, an FC United free-kick caused problems in the Blues’ box but was well dealt with by captain Jordan Holt, before goalkeeper Morgan Bacon fumbled a high cross moments later but recovered well.

Just after the half-hour mark, Breen found skipper Holt with a great pass, only for the home side’s keeper, Adib Badri, to produce a good save.

FC United put Edmondson’s players on the back foot before half-time but wasted possession in some good areas, in front of the 342-strong crowd as the match remained goalless at the break.

The home team again failed to create clear-cut chances, despite some good build-up play, after the interval.

And Carlisle punished them on 54 minutes when Cowburn thumped home a stunning free-kick.

Cowburn almost turned provider just after the hour mark as his corner found Holt, who nodded narrowly wide.

FC United were still well in the game though and went close when a Jack Ward free-kick took a deflection but keeper Bacon did well to adjust.

Blues defender Aidan Hutchinson was sent off 15 minutes from time for a second bookable offence, while Will Shawcross wasted a golden opportunity for the hosts from the resulting set-piece.

But the Blues secured a crucial two-goal cushion on the 80th minute when substitute Lloyd converted after a Jack Egan cross.

FC United perhaps deserved a consolation goal for their part in a competitive match but Carlisle held on for a clean sheet and progress to the next round.
