Nigel Clough has described Carlisle United as possible promotion “outsiders” this season.

The Mansfield Town boss believes the Blues could be challengers if they have a better run with injuries.

Clough was speaking ahead of United’s trip to the One Call Stadium tonight.

“[Carlisle have started the season] very steady – I think they’ve only lost one game so far this season,” he told his club’s website.

“They were tough opposition last year…we won one [and] lost one.

“We’re more than aware of their capabilities. I think they’re one of the outsiders that certainly could challenge this season.

“When Paul Simpson went in last season they immediately picked up and got clear of the relegation [zone].

“I think they’ve made a couple of good signings, [adding to] the good players they've already got there.

“I think if they stay injury-free and get a little bit of luck that everybody needs, there's no reason why they can't be up there [in May].”

Tonight’s game will see clubs and fans pay their respects to Queen Elizabeth II after her death last Thursday.

Football postponed all weekend games, while tonight’s return to action will see a minute’s silence, the National Anthem played and all participants wearing black armbands.

Clough said he understood the decision to call Saturday’s games off, but added: “The only slight counter to that is whether it would’ve given football an opportunity to come together on Saturday and pay their respects.

“I think one thing people tend to do and want to do when there's a feeling of loss is come together, people gather wherever they can.

“When I saw the scenes at the cricket and other sporting events, [I] just had a little thought that maybe we could’ve done something similar.

“[But] I completely understand either way. As long as we make sure we do pay our respects.”

Clough is without Rhys Oates tonight, with Hiram Boateng, James Perch and Jason Law doubtful.
