Carlisle United are fearing another injury lay-off for Jamie Devitt after the midfielder broke down in training.

Devitt is set to have a scan on a thigh problem he suffered on Saturday.

The 32-year-old has been ruled out of Tuesday night’s trip to Mansfield Town.

And the Blues are now awaiting further news on how long he will be missing.

Devitt had only just returned to training after missing several days with a groin issue.

“He trained on Thursday-Friday, and broke down in training on Saturday,” said manager Paul Simpson.

“He’s out of the game tomorrow night. We’re waiting to have a scan to see how serious it is.

“His groin was fine. It’s his thigh. I can’t say a hell of a lot about it yet – we’re hoping he’s having a scan on it today, but we’ve not had that confirmed yet.

“Until we get the results we’re just going to have to wait and see. It’s another blow for Dev and we’ve just got to try and get him right.”

Devitt had been hoping to push himself into starting contention after an impressive substitute showing against Gillingham two weekends ago.

But his prospects of a run in the side has now been dashed.

Simpson has Callum Guy fit and available for the Mansfield game, while he revealed second-choice keeper Michael Kelly has overcome a problem that had been set to rule him out of Saturday’s postponed trip to Harrogate Town.

“He [Kelly] went along to take part in the warm-up and to do a session with Paul Gerrard last week at Fleetwood [United’s Central League Cup game] and damaged his elbow as part of that session,” Simpson said.

“He didn’t train that part of the week but he’s back available for the squad tomorrow.”

United’s manager said some of his other injured players are edging forward in their quest for fitness.

“Ryan Edmondson’s improving slowly – if he goes ok over the next couple of days we’ll start loading him up again and we’ll start looking at getting him back on the grass,” he said.

“Ben Barclay’s back in today – we’re hoping he’ll be back on the grass running over the next couple of days, with a view that maybe in about three weeks he should be back to fitness and ready and available.

“With Tobi Sho-Silva, the actual tear in the hamstring is healing slowly. We’re looking at probably end of September-start of October for him.”
