Former Carlisle United star Adam Murray has left his role in the Championship.

The ex-Blues midfielder has departed West Bromwich Albion after the sacking of head coach Valérien Ismaël.

Murray was assistant head coach at the Hawthorns but has gone as part of the managerial decision.

The 40-year-old had joine the Baggies last July as part of new boss Ismaël's backroom team.

That followed a coaching spell at Barnsley, which also saw Murray have a stint as caretaker manager before Ismaël took charge at Oakwell.

The ex-United man previously managed Boston United and Mansfield Town.

His playing days included a spell at Brunton Park from 2005-6 which brought 52 appearances and four goals.

Murray was involved in two promotion-winning sides under Paul Simpson, helping Carlisle go up from the Conference in 2004/5 and then win the League Two title in 2005/6.

His career also had spells with clubs including Derby County, Mansfield, Notts County, Kidderminster Harriers, Torquay United, Macclesfield Town, Oxford United and Luton Town.

Steve Bruce, who was at the Salford City-Carlisle United game on Tuesday night, has been linked with the West Brom vacancy.

Ismaël was axed after Saturday's 2-0 defeat at Millwall which left West Brom sixth in the Championship. A statement said: "The club would like to place on record its thanks to Valérien and Adam for their efforts and wishes them well in the future.

"The process of recruiting a new head coach is now under way and an appointment will be announced in due course."
