Upperby Gala has been cancelled due to 'saturated ground conditions' at Hammonds Pond.

The community event in Carlisle planned for bank holiday Monday has been postponed by Cumberland Council.

Upperby Gala, was due to be held at Hammond’s Pond, Carlisle on Monday 27 May between 1pm and 4pm.

The recent weather conditions have resulted in the grounds being waterlogged and the event organiser, Cumberland Council, has taken the difficult decision to postpone the event to a date to be confirmed later this year.

A Cumberland Council spokesperson said: “The health and safety of event participants and visitors is our main concern.

"We can’t go ahead with the event on Monday as the grounds within the venue are saturated and won’t allow access to install all the necessary infrastructure.

“We apologise for any disappointment and inconvenience this may cause.

“We will provide an update on the revised date as soon as it’s confirmed.”

The council is in the process of contacting event participants and stall holders.
