Carlisle has seen more than a month’s rainfall in just two days as flooding hit parts of the city.

Carlisle saw 88mm of rain in 48 hours this week whilst the average for May is 55mm across the whole month.

Flooding was widespread across the city and forced the closure of car parks and the disruption of public transport.

Met Office meteorologist Amy Bokota said conditions will improve over the bank holiday, with some areas seeing highs of 23C on Saturday.

The heavy rain seen in recent days is now gradually subsiding, though some showers will continue for some in Cumbria throughout the weekend.

“On the whole, there are no major watchpoints for flooding,” said Amy Bokota.

“While it is expected to rain, this will move quicker and won’t be the same persistent heavy rain we’ve had in the last couple of days.”
