A 16th century helmet linked to a historic band of raiders is commanding attention ahead of an upcoming auction.

The helmet, which is linked to the infamous Border Reivers, will be up for grabs at the Laidlaw Auctioneers and Valuers' auction room in Carlisle on Friday, 23 and Saturday, February 24.

Consigned from collections across the country, including Beatles records from Glasgow, an ornithological library from Dumfries, and an impressive array of British army cap badges from Bristol, the auctioneer has a variety of unique items on offer.

The rarities include the helmet, known as a ‘burgonet’, estimated to be worth between £1,500-2,500.

The raiders were known for conducting violent raids along the Anglo-Scottish border from the late 13th Century to the beginning of the 17th Century.

Families like the Armstrongs and Nixons led the assaults, forcing people to build defensible tower houses for protection.

The period of history gave rise to terms like 'blackmail' and 'bereaved'. Wearing such burgonet helmets earned them the nickname ’steel bonnets’.

The upcoming auction also caters to watch enthusiasts with a range of timepieces.
