Cumbrian athlete Simon Lawson claimed a top-ten finish in the Chicago Marathon.

He came eighth in the men's wheelchair race in a time of 1:36:30.

Lawson, from Maryport, was the fourth highest European finisher in a race won by Switzerland's Marcel Hug.

It was the Cumbrian Paralympian and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist's latest outing on the international stage, with the Cumbrian one of 27 racers from eight nations competing in the men's wheelchair event.

Lawson, 41, has been a leading competitor in wheelchair marathon racing for many years.

His record includes silver at the 2015 Great North Run before Lawson finished 14th at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

He then broke the British record with a time of 1:25:06 at 2017's Boston Marathon - and won the Great North Run that year.

2018 saw Lawson win bronze at the Commonwealth Games on Australia's Gold Coast, and the west Cumbrian repeated the feat at the 2022 Games in Birmingham.

Last year hundreds of people in his home town lined Maryport's streets to salute Lawson following his latest medal-winning exploits.

In the main men's race in Chicago, meanwhile, Kenya's Kelvin Kiptum broke the marathon world record with a sensational time of 2:00:35, beating Eliud Kipchoge's previous mark by 34 seconds.
