PARALYMPIAN hero Simon Lawson found out yesterday just how proud people are of his achievement.

A parade for Simon, who won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games, had to be curtailed at the last moment because of county council objections to a road closure.

That meant students from Netherhall School were unable to line the route.

But that did nothing to dampen the atmosphere in the town centre.

Simon simply did a double trip up and down Senhouse Street to the delight of the 500 or so school children and 200 or more adults who cheered him on.

Town clerk Lisa Douglas said: "It was quite emotional at times. There were lots of banners and flags being waved. It was obvious the children knew exactly who he was and they were shouting and cheering at the top of their voices."

Following the parade, Simon went to Netherhall School where he was greeted by students there.

The school held its own reception for their famous 'old boy'.

The reception included 60 invited guests and around 40 members of the school council, representing all ages.

Simon was given a Netherhall beanie and mug.

Maryport Mayor Peter Kendall presented him with a silver salver engraved with the words: "Simon Lawson In Celebration of your achievements at the Commonwealth Games 2022 Maryport Town Council."

This is not the first recognition for Simon Lawson.

The town turned out to welcome him back from the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2010. On that occasion, the athlete had to complete the whole 26-mile marathon in stifling heat and with nothing to drink because his hydration system failed.

It made no difference to the town - he is still Maryport's hero.
