A WEST Cumbrian family have thanked people for their support after their son was attacked whilst on holiday in Turkey.

The Hoey family, from Egremont, flew out to Marmaris in Turkey on September 25 with friends for ten nights.

The night the Manchester United vs Galatasaray match was played, October 3, Kian Hoey, 19, and two friends walked to find a bar where they could watch the match.

However, things took a turn for the worse when Kian and his friends were attacked in the street.

Kian’s two friends, who were also involved in the incident, were left with cuts and bruises but no major injuries.

19-year-old Kian was left with a broken jaw which meant he had to go into surgery in Marmaris on Thursday, October 5, with costs for the operation being over £4,000.

Talking about the last week, Kian's mum Brenda Hoey said: “It’s been absolutely horrendous. Me and Ruby (Kian's sister) had to leave them and come home and that’s one thing I really didn’t want to do, but I had no choice. I’ve been getting updates from my husband.”

Kian was released from hospital yesterday, October 9, with the insurance company agreeing to pay the hospital bill, taking a great weight off the family’s shoulders.

Brenda said: “He has been discharged and is back at the hotel with his dad. The doctors at the hospital are really pleased with his progress so they have discharged him, and he has got to keep his mouth wired for four weeks, and he can have it removed."

Talking about the insurance, she said: “It’s a weight lifted off my shoulders, if I am honest, because I really didn’t know how we were going to do it. It’s a lot of money to try and get.”

A GoFundMe page was set up last week to support the family with hospital costs, after they feared holiday insurers may not pay out.

The money that has been raised from the page will now go towards getting Kian back to the UK.

Speaking about the page, Brenda said: “It’s meant the world. You don’t realise how many people do actually care. We have had nothing but good comments and the people who have donated... I would really like to say a big thank you. Without them there would be nothing, and at least money is going to cover him getting back home.”

The Foreign Office confirmed last Thursday, September 5 that they were in contact with local authorities about a British man who was hospitalised in Turkey.
