A FUNDRAISING page has been set up after a 19-year-old from Cumbria was attacked while on holiday in Turkey, leaving the teen requiring surgery for a broken jaw.

The Hoey family, from Egremont, flew out to Marmaris in Turkey on September 25 with friends for ten nights, saying they have had a ‘brilliant’ holiday in their resort, where they visit every year.

The night the Manchester United vs Galatasaray match was played, October 3, Kian Hoey, 19, and two friends walked to find a bar where they could watch the match.

However, things took a turn for the worse when Kian and his friends were attacked in the street.

Kian’s mum, Brenda Hoey said: “They were walking back to the hotel and actually talking to them, talking to a group of lads, and then walked past.

"My son has a red devil tattoo on the back of his leg... we're not 100 per cent but we think that’s what they have seen and attacked them from behind.

“One of Kian’s friends ran into the sea - he was getting kicked and he ran into the sea to get away from them.

"His other friend was on the floor. One of them punched my son from behind and they broke his jaw and he’s cracked a few teeth as well.”

After waking up to a text message from Kian saying what had happened, Brenda went down to his room and called a doctor, who advised him to go to the local hospital, where he later found out he had a broken jaw.

Brenda said: “It’s been horrendous. I was devastated yesterday. I knew just by looking it was broken because he couldn’t shut his mouth. I knew something was wrong.”

Kian’s two friends, who were also involved in the incident, were left with cuts and bruises but no major injuries.

Kian went into surgery in Marmaris on Thursday, October 5, but costs for the operation will be over £4,000.

The family fear they may not get their holiday insurance paid out due to alcohol being in Kian’s body - however the family said doctors at the hospital recorded just 1 microgram in a breathalyser at the hospital.

They are also having to pay costs for Kian’s father to stay with him for a week while he recovers from the operation.

A family friend, who is also in Marmaris, has set up a JustGiving page to try and raise funds for the young man, which is available here.

Brenda said the hospital have informed police in Marmaris who she says have now opened an investigation into the incident.

An Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are in contact with the local authorities about a British man who was hospitalised in Turkey.”
