Three young people have been banned from Brunton Park over the throwing of objects at Carlisle United's opening league game.

Police say that three juveniles have been identified as being involved.

The game against Fleetwood Town was held up twice over the throwing of objects from the Warwick Road End.

Carlisle have since suspended ticket sales for the ground's home terrace as they respond to the incidents.

The Cumbria Police unit responsible for United's matchday policing posted two updates on Monday on its social media account amid investigations into the incidents.

And a further update followed on Tuesday.

Their initial post said: "After enquiries conducted by the police and @officialcufc, one juvenile has been identified for partaking in throwing of missiles during the CUFC vs Fleetwood Town fixture on 5th August 2023.

"They have been served with an interim club ban whilst appropriate police action is taken.

"Such behaviour will not be tolerated by the club or police and any further information into persons responsible will be greatly appreciated."

A later update said a second juvenile had been identified "for partaking in throwing of missiles during the CUFC vs Fleetwood Town fixture on 5th August 2023.

And the following day a similar update said a third young person had also been identified and had been given an interim club ban amid investigations.

The police statements came as supporter groups backed United's decision to suspend ticket sales for the Warwick for Carlisle's next two home games against Wigan Athletic and Exeter City this month.

United said they were considering further options, including a reduction in the terrace's capacity, increased searching, restricting Warwick entry to those over 18, the closing of central sections near the goal and even a full closure of the terrace.

Supporters' trust CUOSC, who are part owners of the club and have two directors on its boards, said: "CUOSC back the club’s decision to suspend ticket sales for the Warwick Road End because of disruptive and illegal behaviour.

"We are disappointed it has come to this but fully understand the reasons.

"CUOSC is supportive of exploring any means possible to identify those responsible for throwing items on the pitch.

"We know the vast majority of our fans go to games, enjoy themselves and go home. But someone may know who is responsible or have seen something happen.

"We would appeal to them to pass on this information to stewards, police or to the SLO [supporter liaison officer] by telephoning: 07891779015. They can also email CUOSC at info@cuosc.org.uk.

"The cost implications of this behaviour will have a direct impact on the whole club. The more it happens, the less money goes towards the team.

"We all have to work together to try to stamp it out."

CUOSC director Nigel Davidson, who sits on the club's Holdings board, also endorsed the decision via the United equality, diversity and inclusion social media account he also runs.

"EDI stands 100% behind @officialcufc with this action," he said.

"It’s v disappointing that it has to happen at all because of the actions of a tiny few. Those few are costing us money & potentially points.

"The perpetrators cannot call themselves fans when they are damaging the club STOP!"

Young fans who have revitalised the Warwick Road End in recent months also endorsed United's move.

"Can’t argue with this from the club, behaviour in the Warwick Road End needs to be sorted out," they said.

The young supporters had previously issued a message condemning the throwing of objects in the second half of Saturday's game.

United's supporters' club London Branch added their support to the club's decisions, adding: "The London Branch committee wholeheartedly support Carlisle United in making difficult decisions regarding the behaviour of a small number of fans.

"We would also like to thank the vast majority of young fans in the Warwick for their understanding of the situation."
