FIREFIGHTERS were called out to a large barn fire that saw 40 calves evacuated.

Four fire engines from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service along with the joint incident command unit were called out to the fire on January 2 at 11:50am.

The blaze involved a large quantity of straw in an outbuilding on an access road in Allonby.

On arrival, fire crews discovered a fire in the well-alight barn that measured 40 metres by 10 metres.

Firefighters used four breathing apparatus and two hose reel jets, one hook, and small tools to access and extinguish the fire.

Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said that around 40 calves were evacuated.

Crews were in attendance for approximately two hours and 20 minutes.
