A volunteer bus service is seeking new volunteers so it can expand its community services.

This is after they have confirmed that a new bus is coming soon.

Now in its eighth year of operation, the Border Rambler bus can be seen on its route through Laversdale, Irthington, Hethersgill, Scaleby Hill and Linstock on its way into Carlisle on Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Wednesday service takes it from Brampton via Lanercost and Birdoswald to Gilsland, returning via the Dentons and Low Row.

On each trip, passengers can spend a couple of hours doing their shopping and leisure business in town before the return journey delivers them home again.

Cumbria County Council provides administrative support and eligible passengers may use their ‘NOW’ cards to cover the cost of travel.

A spokesperson from the Border Rambler Trustees said: “A new bus, delivered early in 2023, would enable us to expand the service, running on more days and covering new areas.

“We are looking for ten or twelve new volunteers to join the team of drivers.

“This involves two hours in the morning and two in the afternoon, with a couple of hours free in Carlisle or Brampton while the passengers are doing their shopping.

“All the current drivers find volunteering really rewarding, with most taking a turn at the wheel once or twice a month.”

One regular passenger, who has used the Border Rambler since it began, said: “The Border Rambler is truly a lifeline for many of us who live in isolated places.

“We are so grateful to the volunteers, and we hope that this appeal will find enough new drivers to enable the service to expand and continue.”
