NEW members are sought for a group tasked with providing information and discussion on the potential to host an underground nuclear waste facility.

The Mid Copeland GDF Community Partnership is looking for new members who live in the electoral wards of Gosforth & Seascale and Beckermet.

It has formed to speak to residents about a Geological Disposal Facility, which stores radioactive waste and the potential for it to be sited in Mid Copeland.

Nuclear Waste Services has been tasked with finding a site in the UK with suitable geology and a willing community to host the GDF.

Mid Copeland and South Copeland are just two of the areas picked for closer inspection with Community Partnerships formed to discuss the prospect of housing a GDF with the public, gather feedback and determine if residents are willing.

Mid Copeland GDF Community Partnership would now like to expand its membership with people from the Farming, Youth and Tourism industries.

Community Partnership Chairman Andy Pratt said: “We want to help ensure all voices are heard as we take forward discussions as to whether Mid Copeland could be suitable to host a GDF.

“We would like to continue to develop a Community Partnership which is reflective of the local area and encourage anyone who lives or works in Mid Copeland, who has the knowledge and skills to engage with people in one of these sectors, to consider joining us.
