Carlisle United are “on fire” and destined for promotion, reckons a prominent League One chairman.

The Blues’ fine form in League Two has not gone unnoticed in the division above.

And Peterborough United’s Darragh MacAnthony is convinced Paul Simpson’s side will be playing in the third tier next season.

He said the Blues' free-scoring efforts were a tribute to “good football management” since Simpson’s return to the club.

Speaking on his Hard Truth podcast, MacAnthony made special mention of the Blues when discussing a tight League Two promotion race.

“I will give a shout out to Carlisle – we don’t speak about [them much],” MacAnthony said.

“They are absolutely flying, scoring goals, putting up wins.

“They have a manager [in Paul Simpson] who has come back. [Their progress is down to] good football management.”

MacAnthony was speaking after United underlined their promotion potential with a 5-2 win at Crawley Town.

That sent them second in the table before Stevenage’s midweek win at AFC Wimbledon knocked them back down to third.

Posh supremo MacAnthony added: “I look at the top seven in League Two and couldn’t call any of it.

“But I think Carlisle are on fire and they will go up with Leyton Orient.”
