Ruen Chao Phraya Thai restaurant and takeaway recently opened at its new location in Carlisle, so I went along to try it out.
The restaurant formally reopened at its new location on 5 Cecil Street on February 28, having previously been located on Crosby Street.
It is open every day from 11am until 11pm and offers takeaway and sit-in options.
With the sunlight cascading in and an oriental cover of My Heart Will Go On - or Thaitanic if you will - playing in the background, I felt like the king of the world as we sat down for our meal.
An initial sinking feeling was replaced with satisfaction when my chicken satay starter arrived, as while the peanut sauce didn't look too appetising to a man with a malignance towards mayonnaise, it tasted delicious.
I complemented that with some salt and pepper chips, which were the perfect combination of spicy and salty, while also scoring highly from the crunch point of view.
Our busy host made time to check on us while we waited for our main course, despite juggling other customers and takeaway orders.
Not long after, our main options of beef in oyster sauce and vegetable Pad Thai arrived, and they also went down a treat.
The beef was tender and a had a kick to it, with the oyster sauce gravy going well with the rice side order. The inclusion of mushrooms and peppers in the dish also contributed to an excellent mix of flavours and textures.
The vegetable Pad Thai included noodles, carrots, bean sprouts and garlic chives, all of which resulted in a comforting, tasty meal.
While the food was delicious, it was perhaps the warm, homely atmosphere that sets this restaurant apart. The owner was kind and welcoming, while the wonderful array of artwork made for interesting viewing as we waited for our food.
Warmed by a combination of the sunlight and electric fire, and my stomach full of good food, I left feeling satisfied and sleepy.
For anyone looking to eat authentic Thai food in the city, Ruen Chao Phraya is a great option.
