Cumberland Council have announced a three-year deal worth more than £50 million to fix roads across the region amidst widespread criticism of the state of roads across Cumberland.

The £55 million agreement has been signed by local company, DSD Construction Limited for tasks including road resurfacing, installation of new road markings, upgrading ironworks, pothole repairs and routine maintenance.

Under this framework agreement, valued at up to £55 million for three years, the council will allocate at least £9.5 million for the first year for various tasks.

Local residents have been increasingly frustrated with the state of the roads across Carlisle and Cumberland which prompted John Stevenson, MP for Carlisle, to write Cumberland Council about the state of roads across the city.

Mr Stevenson launched an online survey in which residents could highlight problem areas for potholes across Carlisle.

In the letter, Mr Stevenson includes a list of hotspots across the Carlisle constituency that residents have highlighting as problematic which include Brampton Road, Kingstown Road, and London Road.

Mr Stevenson said that the responses paint a 'poor picture' of the road network in Cumberland and called for a ‘plan of action’ from the council.

Last year, more than £3m of government funding was allocated to fix potholes across the Cumberland council area and the government recently announced a more than £100 million investment into transport infrastructure across Cumberland – including road improvement.

The news was welcomed by Martin Tweddle, operations director from DSD Construction Limited.

“We are extremely proud to have been selected by Cumberland Council to deliver the resurfacing framework over the next three years,” said Mr Tweddle.

“As one of the largest SME employers in the region, it’s fantastic to see Cumberland Council investing so heavily in the local economy whilst securing and enhancing local employment and supply chain opportunities.
