Carlisle presenter India Willoughby has slammed the council over Stanwix area speed bumps after she shelled out £400 on damage to her car.

India Willoughby has to navigate ‘around 20 poorly-maintained speed bumps' on Tarraby Lane, Beech Grove, Lansdowne Crescent, Knowfield Avenue, and Larch Drive whilst visiting members of her family regularly.

"I probably have to ‘bump’ across 20 per visit. It’s like doing the Top Gear assault course,” India said.

At a recent MOT, it’s been shown that the faulty bumps have damaged her car's suspension which she states has amounted to a bill of around £400.

Ms Willoughby, who will also be known for appearances on Celebrity Big Brother, has contacted Cumberland Council over the issue, claiming compensation for the cost of the repairs.

However, the council’s insurers require proof from the public that the bumps are defective and hazardous before any action can be taken.

“Maven says all responsibility for proving a speed bump is defective and a hazard sits with the layperson - which I find incredible.

“They want me to go out with a ruler and tape measurer taking the width and depth of their speedbumps. Even though they are responsible for public highways.

“They’ve even asked if I have dashcam footage of the actual ‘bump’ on the day in question that caused the damage. I mean, it’s nonsensical.

“How on earth is an ordinary person supposed to meet any of their demands, without commissioning a team of road engineers?” she said.

A spokesperson from Cumberland Council said: "The requirements for collecting evidence for an insurance claim is set by insurers themselves and the council is not involved in this process.

"We are aware that damage does occur to speedbumps which are rectified as part of our ongoing repair programme," they said.
