To many, the ‘Ice-Bucket Challenge’ may seem a thing of the past, and in the eyes of some  nervous nominees facing the ice, they may wish it stayed that way.

However, as many social media users may have noticed, the challenge seems to have made its come back in 2025- it’s return initiated by the University of South Carolina Mental Illness Needs Discussion (MIND) Club, titling their own version the ‘USC MIND Challenge’.

The movement sees participants pouring ice water over themselves. Filming this and posting their video on social media under the hashtag ‘#speakyourMIND’. With many ice-facers tagging their own nominees to further carry forward the challenge.
As unpleasant the thought of dousing oneself in freezing cold water may sound, the importance of the message behind the movement cannot be understated.

Looking specifically, the USC MIND Challenge aims to encourage donations to Active Minds, a non-profit organisation dedicated to spreading mental health awareness and providing education around the topic. Looking more broadly however, the challenge simply, but crucially, also aims to spark wider conversation around the subject of mental health, encouraging any sufferers to talk, and emphasising the normality of mental health issues; reminding it’s audience members that we are not alone in the battle against our own minds.

Their mission so far has been extremely successful, with USC MIND gathering over eight-hundred thousand followers on Instagram alone, with the trend involving thousands of participants through self and peer nominations, and, incredibly, raising nearly two-hundred and eighty thousand pounds for Active Minds so far.
The work of participants has been outstanding and their efforts still remain strong, as ‘ice-bucketers’ continue to take social media platforms by storm as, in-turn, donations keep on rising.
