Whether or not Aspatria gain promotion this season, supporters have been treated to some highly entertaining rugby and the latest against Aldwinians provided a perfect example.

The Black Reds scored 10 tries on the way to a 62-32 victory, leaving the visitors to rattle in a further four as they chased down a bonus point.

Aspatria opened the scoring after five minutes with their first foray into the visitors’ 22. The catalyst for the score was back row Greg Dickinson who ripped through the visitors defence with a charge down the midfield.

Dickinson looked favourite to cross the line but the ball was mishandled, resulting in a scrum.

The set-piece was messy but from this Aspatria regained the ball and number eight Matthew Atkinson picked up and attacked a weak blind side to barge over in the corner.

Aspatria failed to control the ball from the restart and, in the scramble that followed, a penalty was conceded which James Worrall put over.

The hosts responded immediately when, from a position on the left, centre Craig Foster and wing Grant Bethwaite combined to move the ball into the Aldwinians 22.

When the full-back took over possession, he still had plenty to do but his sharp cut inside outfoxed the defence and he crossed the line.

A third try followed on 16 minutes, created by stand-off Jack Clegg who cut through the defensive line.

Aldwinians were left standing and simply could not reorganise before Atkinson got his hands on the ball and crashed over for his second of the day.

Despite the tries being rattled in by Aspatria, the visitors showed some short spells of resilience. With 23 minutes gone, they clawed the score line back with another Worrall penalty.

On 26 minutes, Liam Ridley scored Aspatria’s fourth try to register the bonus point.

The creators were Clegg and Atkinson around halfway and the gap they forged set centre Scott Akehurst off on a charge to the 22, where Ridley took over and galloped to the line.

The game was wide open and Aldwinians retained ambition when possession was achieved.

On 30 minutes, a penalty allowed them the opportunity to set up a catch and drive move close to the Aspatria line. When play broke open, Alex Martin saw the gap and darted through for a converted try.

In this game, the scoreboard was never still for long and minutes later, Aspatria produced one of the best scores seen at Bower Park this season.

Backs and forwards combined in a passing movement that would have graced any game.

There were eight or more interchanges involving virtually the entire Aspatria team; all designed to outwit the Aldwinians defence.

The pick of the short bursts came from Akehurst and prop Neil Richardson but last in line was left wing Jack Robinson, who found himself on the right flank with a clear run to the line for the fifth try.

On 37 minutes, Robinson scored his second after more impressive work from Dickinson aided by Miller, and they led 36-13 at half-time.

Within a minute of the restart, Aspatria rocked the visitors with a seventh try.

Back row Phil Dixon stunned Aldwinians when he chased the kick off and regained the ball.

When he was eventually brought to ground, Aspatria had the easy task of recycling wide left, where centre Craig Foster darted over unopposed.

On 56 minutes, Aspatria lost prop Neil Richardson to a yellow card but, after ten minutes of solid attack by the visitors, Aspatria remained otherwise unscathed.

Despite regaining possession, Aspatria just could not get clear of their 22 and a minute after losing Richardson, conceded a try to prop Tyler Gibson, following an impressive Aldwinians maul.

Yet again, Aldwinians conceded possession from the restart and this error put the ball into the hands of Dickinson who broke through the first line of defence to hand over to the onrushing Atkinson.

The big second row appeared to have been stopped on the line but he somehow managed to wrestle the ball to the ground.

Back from injury, Daniel Rooney came off the bench and, with his first attacking run, got himself over the line.

The build-up to the score was excellent, with the hardworking Atkinson launching an attack down the right before the back division took over and put Rooney in space.

On 69 minutes, Andrew Miller raced across the pitch to execute a last ditch tackle, saving a score.

Miller did not have much support around him and his next action to prevent play flowing cost him a yellow card. Aspatria scrum-half Jason Ward decided to debate the decision with the referee and he found himself trudging off the field behind Miller.

Down to 13, Aspatria looked disorganised and from the resulting scrum, Aldwinians simply passed the ball wide left where Alex Hughes crossed the line.

Aspatria had the game won but Aldwinians tails were now up as they chased a fourth try with only minutes on the clock remaining the objective was achieved.

Martin crafted his way over and a bonus point that the team deservedly earned with a never say die attitude.

There was still time to allow Aspatria to score try number ten, a fine 60-metre solo effort by Grant Bethwaite.
