There were mixed fortunes for Keswick Hockey Club’s first-team squads at the weekend.

The men were unfortunate to lose 3-1 to the City of Manchester but the Ladies had a comfortable 4-1 win over Ulverston.

In the men’s match, Keswick started well and soon had Manchester on the back foot with good running from Ben Harrison and Rob Cook creating a number of early chances for the home team.

However, it was Manchester who took the lead, against the run of play, after ten minutes with a breakaway goal.

The home team responded well, with Mark Bowen and Clive Swanston building well from midfield, leading to a chance which Steve Salveson slotted home to level the score.

After the break, the Keswick midfielders were starting to have a bigger influence on the game, with Paul Sloan making several runs which dragged his Manchester opponents out of position trying to cover him.

Unfortunately for Keswick, they were unable to convert these openings.

Manchester kept looking for the break and were able to score on two of these counter-attacks to record a very flattering 3-1 win.

The Ladies’ game went more to plan, with Keswick rarely out of the Ulverston half.

Grace Law broke the deadlock to make it 1-0 with a shot from the edge of the D, soon followed by Gayle Laverty-Fennell who made it 2-0.

The second half followed in a similar vein to the first with Keswick attacking for the majority of the time.

When Ulverston did manage to mount decent attacks themselves, they were dealt with well by Sarah Scott and Emma Harrison.

Keswick soon made it 3-0 with another shot from near the edge of the D courtesy of Amy Walker.

It was Walker again on target to notch the fourth after running onto a pass from Jodie Cowperthwaite.

Then, with the last touch of the game, Ulverston got on the score-sheet courtesy of their captain Charlotte Bower.
