A 2-1 win at Colne was achieved after making five changes from the side which had played in the last league game on Saturday.
“Lads came in and had the chance to impress after spending time on the bench, and I was pleased with how they performed,” said Hewson.
“We started well and, although we seemed to lose it for a while, once we started passing the ball properly, we looked a lot better.
“It was good to see Rob Wilson back in getting a full game and he did really well, while Gari Rowntree looked like his old self.
“Jamie Mellen was breaking up play and using the ball well, so there was a positive there, and I thought Sam Joel looked dangerous in the second half.
“If there was a down side, it was that we didn’t convert enough of our chances, so that when they scored it gave us a nervous last 15 minutes or so."
Hewson also said he had been pleased with a debut performance from Tommy Whitehead, a local west Cumbrian who had spent time with Carlisle United.
Now the management pair, Hewson and Lee Andrews, have to come up with a team to play Whitehaven in the Cumberland Cup tomorrow.
“It’s not perfect by any means, because a good number of our reserve play for local sides on a Saturday and some of the lads who would have sat it out on Thursday will be involved,” said Hewson.
Josh Calvert went off at Colne with a strain, while Gari Rowntree suffered a cut under his eye.
