AT the Times & Star we want to recognise the Workington Town players that have made an impact on our readership and provided entertainment for fans throughout the year through the Newsquest Workington Town Player of the Year award.
We are now calling on Town fans to nominate their ‘player of the year’ to be recognised at the presentation night, with voting closing at 4pm on Tuesday, September 15.
The shortlist for the Newsquest Player of the Year 2026 is:
Lucas Castle
The hard working prop was consistently one of Town’s best, particulary in the 2nd half of the season. The tall Australian carried well and off loaded where possible to maintain attack. A dependable forward who has shown leadership qualities throughout the campaign.
Bear Williams
The all action forward has become a firm crowd favourite with his high work rate, energy and his commitment to making those big hits we all love to see. The modern game revolving around being able to do big minutes in the middle and Bear has put in his all.
Callum Phillips
The retiring Phillips has been outstanding, specifically in defence, with strong distribution from dummy half and a sharp rugby brain he has rolled back the years in his final campaign and can be proud of a great career finishing off back at his home Town club. A leader, a standard setter and will be a big miss.
Jamie Doran
Once he got up to speed after missing pre season due to recovery from ankle surgery Jamie started to do what Jamie does and significantly influence games. Returning at hooker he masterminded the away derby victory at Whitehaven before laterly moving into the halves after injury to Dom Wear and excelling there too. Jamie signed a new 2 year contract and the Town faithful will be delighted to see him continue his long association with the club.
Evan Lawther
The mercurial talents of Evan Lawther have excited and frustrated the Town fans in equal measure but this undoubted talent has had a good campaign and on his day can cause havoc, his challenge now is to find consistency in his game and maximise his huge potential. A joy to watch when in full flow.
