Veteran former Carlisle United defender Simon Grand has signed for a new club - at the age of 42.

The centre-back has linked up with non-league side Charnock Richard after leaving Lancaster City.

It is a second spell at the North West Counties League club for the former Blues promotion winner.

Grant recently confirmed his departure from Northern Premier League Premier Division side Lancaster after just under a year with the Dolly Blues.

Charnock Richard, announcing the defender's arrival, said: "We’re absolutely delighted to announce the return of Simon Grand, who has penned a deal to re-sign for the Villagers.

"The defender joined Charnock at the start of the 2022/23 season and will be looking to push on in the NWCFL 🙌

"Welcome back, Grandy!"

Grand's time at Carlisle two decades ago saw the ex-Rochdale man involved in consecutive promotions under Paul Simpson.

He was part of the squad that went up through the Conference play-offs in 2004/05 and then won the League Two title in 2005/06.

Grand made 49 appearances and scored six goals for the Cumbrians.

His long career since then has included spells at Grimsby Town, Morecambe, Northwich Victoria, Fleetwood Town, Mansfield Town, Aldershot Town, Southport, Telford United, Barrow, Salford City, AFC Fylde, Chester and Bamber Bridge.

Charnock Richard are ninth in the North West Counties League Premier Division after seven games.
