Carlisle United boss Rob Elliot said it would have been “selfish” to deny Jonah Lowes first-team experience at this stage of his career.
The teenage Blues midfielder has rejoined Darlington on loan in a move until January.
The first-year pro had been around the United first-team squad in the opening weeks of the season and made his league debut as a substitute at Yeovil Town.
But with openings in the side sparing at this early point of 2026/27, Elliot felt it was the right move to allow 18-year-old Lowes to gain more experience in National League North.
“It’s about his development over the selfish needs of the first team for him to travel and not get minutes,” said Elliot.
“When he’s needed, I’m sure he’ll impress, because he’s a top kid.
“We’ll make sure we do that right, but it’s important that we think about the longer term.”
Lowes was named man of the match in his first game back at Darlington as Steve Watson’s side lost 2-0 to King’s Lynn Town on Saturday. Another outing for Lowes, and fellow Blues loan teenager Amaru Smith, will come at Chorley tonight.
The midfielder enjoyed a positive spell with the Quakers in the closing weeks of last season.
Elliot said more senior players were in front of Lowes right now, hence the decision to allow him to make the loan move.
He added: “We’ve got [Stephen] Wearnie, we’ve got [Teddy] Jenks, we’ve got Bunks [Harvey Bunker], we’ve got Miggy [Azeez]…
“We just wanted to make sure that Jonah's development wasn't hindered.
“He hasn’t played many games and we want him getting minutes.
“He was unlucky against Scunthorpe – he was ill, and he might have got minutes there.
“But we just decided the loan was the best option, and because it’s a youth loan, we can bring him back at any time.
“This is the balance with Jonah, because we think he’s going to be a very, very good player for us.”
