Carlisle United have launched an appeal against the red card shown to goalkeeping coach Jack Cudworth in the Scunthorpe United game.
Head coach Rob Elliot confirmed today that the Blues are trying to get the decision rescinded.
Cudworth was sent to the stands amid disagreements in the second half over the officials’ handling of the new rule over goalkeeper injuries.
His sending-off puts the coach at risk of a touchline ban.
But Elliot says Carlisle are hopeful of avoiding that for Saturday’s trip to Boreham Wood.
“We sent an appeal in today,” he told the News & Star.
“That’s just based on [the fact that] we got told different things from the fourth official.
“The actual ruling, we believe, is that because it was a collision with a player we didn't actually have to take anyone off.
“So I think there's a bit of confusion from everyone.
“We’re all human beings and we all make mistakes – I definitely make a lot of mistakes in my job – so there's no sort of issues with the fourth official and the referee.
“But hopefully there's a bit of common sense and Jack's able to be with us on Saturday.
“But we'll see – it's always tough when you do appeal these things.”
Cudworth was sent off by referee Dean Watson midway through the second half after Blues keeper Adam Desbois went down for treatment following a save he made during Carlisle’s 4-2 win on Monday.
The new rule says that, in the event of keepers needing treatment, the team’s management have ten seconds to select an outfield player to leave the pitch – and if that does not happen, the captain must be withdrawn.
Elliot, after the game, said there had been a lack of “communication” by the officials, leading to the confusion around which Cudworth had been protesting.
The United boss said Carlisle initially felt they would not have to take any player off, due to certain exceptions to the new rule. As the incident unfolded, Elliot then said the Blues intended to withdraw Regan Linney, only to be told captain Morgan Feeney would have to go off.
