Carlisle United fans are being urged to dig out their classic Blues shirts from the past at a ‘Retro Kit Day’ later this month.

The Cumbrians’ National League home clash with Southend United on Saturday, September 12 has been chosen for the initiative.

It will see a repeat of the Retro Kit Day idea last seen at Brunton Park in the 2023/24 season.

The initiative is being led by the Carlisle United Supporters’ Trust in conjunction with the Carlisle United Heritage Group and the club.

While supporters are being encouraged to wear shirts from past United eras, some rare and vintage Blues shirts will also be on display at the game.

And a special prize will also be on offer to fans judged to be wearing the “best” old-school United shirts.

Carlisle fan James Stringer, who is involved in the retro kit initiative, said: “We will have a collection of vintage and match-worn shirts that will be displayed in the Trust’s gazebo located at the ground.

“I would also like fans to send in requests of what they would like to see, and we will try our best to get as many of those out on display for supporters to enjoy.

“As part of the display, we will have a shirt from 1982, and one from 1992/93 that should catch the eye.”

The previous retro kit day came in United’s home game against Lincoln City in League One on April 1, 2024.

Trust chair Dan MacLennan told the News & Star: “We did the first Retro Kit Day a couple of years ago, and it was a success.

“Appetite has been there to repeat it, so we’ve got it sorted and look forward to seeing what treasures are unlocked from the Blue Army’s wardrobes and storage!

“We are looking forward to hosting the Heritage Group at our matchday gazebo – they’ll be displaying a collection of some of the rarer shirts they have, continuing their excellent work, of which we’re big supporters.

“Fans who are judged to have the ‘best’ shirts will also get an opportunity to take part in the club’s Big Shot challenge at half-time.”
