Workington Ladies fall to Wakefield in top of the table clash

Town are only second to their Yorkshire rivals on points difference, with a win for either sending them clear at the top. Both clubs currently sit three points clear of third-place Leigh Miners Rangers. 

The ladies have had the backing of the whole Workington Town community as of late, and this was none more so apparent than when the sponsorship group ‘The Blue Knights’ held a special 1990s reunion at Derwent Park on Friday evening.

Interviews came via Zoom for some of Town’s Australian and other overseas stars from the glory days, as Phil McKenzie, James Pickering, Peter Walsh, Brad Hepi and Australian sensation Mark Milligan, among those on the Zoom interview. 

The latter, Mulligan, lending his support to the Ladies, “we still keep an eye on the club. Go on, Workington Town Ladies. Still unbeaten. Up The Town.” Proclaimed Mulligan. As cheers rang out across the Marquee. 

Town continued their fine form in their first set, defending well before a 70-meter break from Scrimgour saw Town open the scoring.

Chatters making the extra for 0-6. As Town seemed to be gaining the upper hand with some superb kicking from Chatters.

This was until Town were called not square at the markers and Wakefield made the possession count to level the score on 9 minutes, 6-6. 

In 18 minutes, Wakefield took the lead for the first time when a well-worked move saw Wakefield go over outwide, for 10-6. The kick fell well wide. 

The pendulum swing was firmly in the hosts' favour as twenty minutes passed and Wakefield extended their lead to 14-6 when Wakefield played through hands and went past 4 Town defenders to score. 

The game then ebbed and flowed to half-time with neither side being able to break the other down. 

Trinity scored the first try and a game-breaking try when the Wakefield centre broke through close to the line to take the score out to 18-6. 

Town weren’t to be down and out by any means as Currie scored out wide. Chatters missing the kick agonisingly wide of the posts. for 18-10. 

A strange-looking try came to Trinity towards the end of the game when what looked like an incorrect play of the ball for Williamson to score. The kick is going over for 24-10 and potentially giving Town no way back. 

Trinity went back to back and killed the game when a huge break from the Trinity fullback exposed a tired Town defence to see the game through when a crossfield kick was missed by Currie and Jenkinson. 28-10. 

Town were back on the attack as they posed threats, but Melissa Nicholson knocked on the Trinity 10 to end their spell of pressure to end the game. A Herculean effort from Town was in vain as Trinity go top.
