WORKINGTON Town Ladies will travel to the DIY Kitchen Stadium, Wakefield, on Sunday in a potential title-deciding game in the league as Town go looking for retribution for their last defeat back in the 2025 semi-finals in League One.
The two sides meet as the top two in their division and were separated by points difference only, with Town Ladies undefeated in 6 in all competitions, including a pulsating 16-16 draw with their hosts Wakefield Trinity at the Fibrus Community Stadium on a day Evie (Tonkin) was the tonic Town needed, as her hat-trick was the key to a point that day.
It’s far from disrespectful to point out that the two sides are strides ahead of their opponents in the division, and the early-season form backs this up as Trinity and Town are only separated by points differential at the top of the League.
Trinity +104 and Town +82. What will be encouraging for Town is their defence, especially over the last two games, conceding just one try, a barge over from Illingworth under the posts last week.
Gareth Nicholson, Town head coach, knows the magnitude of the game: “We know how important this game is for both teams and what a good side Wakefield are, especially at home.
"Wakefield will ask plenty of questions of us in both attack and defence, but our main focus this week has been on ourselves.
"We’re confident we can match them, if not better them in every area, but we’ll need to be at our very best to do that. It’s now about taking that confidence and belief into Sunday’s game.
I’ve no doubt it will be another great advert for women’s rugby league”.
There also looks to be a big boost for Town going into the game as they could welcome back Sophie Price.
Price is arguably the League’s standout hooker, tackling well above her size and deadly from a quick ruck.
The hosts are also fully aware of the magnitude of the game as they’re believed to be streaming the game live from their Super League ground from 2pm on Sunday.
