WORKINGTON Town Ladies returned to the Fibrus Community Stadium on Sunday for the first time in 2026 as they looked to make it 3 wins from 3 league games against fellow unbeaten side Wakefield Trinity.
The two sides were in fine form going into the match on Sunday, with Town beating Leigh Miner Rangers and Stanningley in their opening two fixtures.
The visitors placed 1 position and 2 points ahead of Town have played three games this season in the league, defeating Illingworth, Stanningley, and Leigh Miner Rangers, scoring 88 points in the process and letting in 22. Town, on the other hand have 52 points to their name and has conceded 28.
The history between the two ladies' sides is one of fierce competition as Trin holds the advantage 2-1 in terms of victories.
However, both of Trin’s victories have come at the DIY Kitchen Stadium. A stat that would give Town confidence going into the table-topping clash.
The Trinity Ladies were looking to emulate their male counterparts, who hammered Catalan Friday evening, but would need to do something they’ve never done: beat Town in Cumbria.
The game started with each side testing each other out, but the hosts were unable to make many chances as Wakefield's defence was strong.
The deadlock was broken in 11 minutes when Wakefield exploited a gap in the Town defence out wide for 0-4, the conversion missing from wide. The return set saw a stoppage for Wakefield due to an injury to their front row.
The game continued in a back-and-forth manner with Chatters kicking out in the full, becoming a regular for Trinity to move up the pitch.
The game ebbed and flowed further until Town’s Scottish sensation Evie Tonkin intercepted a ball and raced 60 meters to score on the stroke of half-time, converting for 6-4.
The serving half started much better for Town as they collected their own kick off and put five minutes of pressure on Trinity as Tonkin grabbed a brace with a fantastic link up with Currie to score 10 in from touch, Chatters converting into a strong wind for an early second half lead of 12-4.
At 52 minutes, a Wakefield high swirling kick caused Town troubles, and the resulting knock on saw the visitors in out wide. The Trinity sides landed a massive kick to reduce the deficit to 12-10.
Town scored the try of the game when Keeley Chatters made a 60-meter break to give Town a fantastic position, as Tonkin scored her hat-trick as Chatter's kick failed into the wind.
Trinity was level two minutes later when Town lost the ball coming out of yardage. They converted for 16-16.
The game then continued to go between the two sides, neither being able to gain an advantage in the game before the other pulled it back.
As all the 365 in attendance stood to applaud the ladies' efforts on both sides.
