Paul Simpson says it’s unlikely that Carlisle United will look at any trialists this pre-season.

The Blues have regularly assessed out-of-contract hopefuls in the early stages of training in past summers.

But manager Simpson says the prospect is more remote this time around as he builds his squad for the new League Two season.

Carlisle take on Kendal Town in their second pre-season friendly tomorrow night, having beaten Penrith 8-0 in Friday's opener.

Asked if any trialists could be involved in that or other games, the Blues boss said: “No, I'm not thinking trialists at the moment.

“I always feel a bit sorry for trialists because they have to come in and be absolutely outstanding – and they're already coming in ten days behind everybody else so it's a challenge for them.

“Unless there's something really special that can come and make a big difference to us, I'd be surprised if there were any coming in.”

Simpson remains keen to add more signings to his squad, with the United boss hoping to secure a seventh summer signing this week.

There is also the prospect of departures with both Jack Armer and Alfie McCalmont close to leaving the Blues – the former having been linked with Burton Albion.

United’s manager has made permanent signings so far but retains a close interest in the loan market.

But those possible deals may come later in pre-season, Simpson said.

“We're certainly making enquiries in the loan market as well,” the United boss told the News & Star.

“The problem that you have with loans is that Premier League or Championship clubs don't allow them to come out until they've done their pre-season tours with their own clubs.

“So that's probably going to be end of July, beginning of August, which isn't ideal but sometimes you have to accept that.

“So we're looking at all possibilities.”
