Around 1,500 runners will take on the UK’s most iconic ultramarathon on Saturday, 15 June.

Runners will attempt to conquer 70 miles from Carlisle Castle to Gateshead Baltic Quay, battling a lofty +3460 ft of elevation across the historic Hadrian’s Wall country.

The Wall ultramarathon, operated by leading adventure trip and event company Rat Race since 2012, is set to host its biggest meet yet.

The remarkable race will be taken on by a mix of first-timers and seasoned pros, with runners coming not just from local areas but also from as far reaching as Denmark, Belgium, Germany, the US and Canada.

Those taking part are raising money for numerous worthy causes, including Rat Race’s partner, Children with Cancer UK.

Participants have the choice to either run or trek the classic route.

Designed specifically to be completed in 26 hours at a minimum pace of 3mph, The Wall is seen as the perfect stepping stone into the world of ultramarathons for newcomers looking to venture beyond the typical 26.2 miles.

This marathon route is steeped in myth and legend, winding through the English countryside, moor, river and valley, taking in tourist attractions like Lanercost Priory and The Sill along the way, and finishing up amidst the bridges of the Newcastle Gateshead Quayside.

Runners can discover the remnants of forts, towers, turrets and towns once standing guard over Hadrian’s Wall, get a glimpse of unique Roman artefacts and absorb the impressive views of the stunning landscape.

The Wall’s adventure leader, Rob, who also serves as Rat Race’s project manager, said: "The Wall is one of our longest-serving adventure formats for a reason.

"It comprises a continuous and fully supported journey with incredible views along the way, defying the stereotype that ultramarathons can only be completed by elite athletes.

"We pride ourselves on expert way-marking and legendary Pit Stops to keep runners fuelled up from Carlisle to Newcastle with the most unbelievable spreads you have ever seen in an ultrarun.

"If you don’t come for the breathtaking scenery, come for the snacks!"
