Veteran former Carlisle United defender Gary Liddle will be lining up against Workington Reds next season.

That's after the experienced player joined Reds' Northern Premier League Premier Division rivals Whitby Town.

Liddle, 37, has also been named assistant manager at the club.

It follows a recent spell at Spennymoor Town for the man who played for United from 2017 to 2019.

Liddle will also support Town boss Haslam as Assistant Manager during the 2024/25 season.

Nathan Haslam, the Whitby boss, said: “I’m delighted to get Lids on board as both a player and by my side as assistant manager.

“He knows what it takes to be successful in the Northern Premier League and his leadership, experience and professionalism will be a huge asset for the team.”

Liddle will link up with former United team-mates at the Towbar Express Stadium.

Also in the Whitby ranks last season were Nathan Thomas and Connor Simpson.

They finished 12th in the NPL Premier last season, five places above 17th-placed Workington.

Liddle, in his time with United, made 117 appearances, scoring two goals.
