Carlisle United’s loanees in Scotland both played their part in important wins in the battle for League One survival.

Kai Nugent tasted victory with Annan Athletic while Max Kilsby also contributed to three vital points for Queen of the South.

Nugent was a substitute for Peter Murphy’s Annan as they defeated Cove Rangers 4-2 at Galabank.

The 19-year-old replaced ex-United prospect Josh Galloway early in the second half for Annan.

That came with the scores level at 2-2 following goals from Tommy Goss and Matty Douglas for the hosts and efforts by Kyle Connell and Josh Kerr for Cove.

Benjamin Luissint and Josh Walker then clinched the points which took Annan up to eighth on goal difference with three games to go.

Nugent’s 24th appearance of the season came as Annan inched ahead of Stirling Albion on goal difference, with the side who finishes ninth facing the play-offs to retain their third-tier status.

Queen of the South are also in the battle and they remain three points above Annan and Stirling after a 2-0 win over relegated Edinburgh City in which defender Kilsby got the full 90 minutes.

The 20-year-old helped the Doonhamers keep their struggling opponents at bay in his tenth outing of his half-season loan.

At the other end, ex-Blues striker Gavin Reilly netted for Queens before Paul McKay clinched the points for the seventh-placed Dumfries outfit. Stirling’s 1-0 defeat to Kelty Hearts leaves them second bottom.

There were latest outings for Workington Reds, meanwhile, for Carlisle’s youth team loanees.

Sam Hetherington and Aran Fitzpatrick started against Marine while fellow teenager Jake Allan was a substitute.

Hetherington was replaced by Bobby Carroll at the break while Allan came on for Jordan Little with 18 minutes to go, Fitzpatrick playing the full game as Reds went down to a 3-0 defeat, Conor Tinnion sent off in a sixth consecutive defeat.

Danny Grainger’s side are 15th in the Northern Premier League Premier Division. Hetherington, Fitzpatrick, Allan plus former Reds loanee Josh O’Brien – who was on the United bench against Blackpool on Saturday – were last year awarded third-year scholarships to remain at Brunton Park.
