Carlisle United's supporters' trust believes the future can still be bright for the Blues despite relegation.

And CUOSC say they have belief that United can "right the wrongs" of this season's failure in League One.

The trust issued a statement on Sunday morning after Carlisle's return to the fourth tier was confirmed following the 2-0 defeat to Northampton Town.

United have struggled to compete in League One all season and have made a swift return to League Two with four games to go.

CUOSC, who have a ten per cent stake in United's Holding company, say relegation "hurts" but paid tribute to the support the team has had from fans all campaign.

They say the faith of the Blue Army, plus the wider improvements at United under the Piatak ownership, gives them belief that Carlisle will turn things around on the pitch.

The full CUOSC statement says:

"Relegation. A dreaded prospect for fans of clubs up and down the country each season. Unfortunately, this time around it’s our own Carlisle United who have the dreaded ‘R’ alongside our name in the league table. And it hurts. Especially after the highs and jubilation of our Wembley play-off Final win less than a year ago.

"But us Cumbrians are hardy folk and if any fanbase was built to withstand an obstacle on a journey, then it’s the magnificent Blue Army. You’ve followed the lads in superb numbers both home and away across the season, including those incredible 4k plus followings at Bolton and Wigan, and it’s one of the reasons why we, the CUOSC board, believe our beloved club can overcome this setback to move forward in the summer months and into next season.

"There can be no denying that this season has been a big disappointment, and we can't gloss over the shortcomings on the pitch this season. The shining lights of encouragement have been the incredible and sustained support even in challenging times.

"That unwavering backing of the team is a big reason why we are feeling positive about next season. Yes, we’ll be feeling downbeat for a short while, but then we’ll dust ourselves down and get ready to get behind the lads once more and aim to propel them up the table.

"Following the mid-season takeover by Castle Sports Group, it’s clear that off the field, Carlisle United is in a far better position than it has been for many years – legacy debt is being dealt with, a new training ground is in the works and various ground improvements are ongoing – and that is why we’re backing the Blues to right this season’s wrongs on the field.

"Let’s get behind this club this summer, build on the great work that is going on off the pitch and make sure we push for a return to League One at the first time of asking."
