The best part of three decades on, and the chant still lingers.
As Dean Walling made his way onto the Brunton Park pitch on Easter Monday, he was greeted by warm applause - and, from some fans, the trademark 1990s call of "Deano, Deano..."
The former defender, who made scoring from corners an art form for the Blues in the 1990s, retains iconic status among supporters.
No wonder he received such a fond welcome on his return as United's guest for the game between two of his former clubs.
Walling, 54, mingled with fans before the League One game between the Blues and Lincoln City.
He was a guest in the club's bars and also caught up with old colleagues, including former team-mate and current United coach Billy Barr, ahead of the match.
Deano then performed the half-time Golden Gamble draw before joining in the crossbar challenge at the Warwick Road End.
It was a latest return to his old home for a hugely popular player, who played for United from 1991 to 1997.
Initially signed as a striker, the ex-Leeds United and Guiseley man was eventually converted to centre-back - and went on to establish himself as one of United's key performers in an era of success.
He shone in the run to the 1993/94 play-offs under Mick Wadsworth before forming a superb defensive partnership with Derek Mountfield in the 1994/95 Division Three title season.
Walling was also in the first Blues team to play at Wembley in the latter season's Auto-Windscreens Shield final when United lost to Birmingham City in golden goal extra-time.
And, after relegation from Division Two in 1995/96, he was again pivotal in the side that bounced back to promotion under Mervyn Day the following campaign.
And in 1996/97 Walling also played in another Auto-Windscreens final at Wembley - holding his nerve to score in United's successful penalty shoot-out against Colchester United, as the Cumbrians won at the national stadium for the first time.
In October 1997, as Carlisle's successful side started to break up after the controversial sacking of Day by then owner Michael Knighton, he moved on to Lincoln, where he spent the next two years and, in his first campaign at Sincil Bank, helping the Imps to fourth-tier promotion.
A spell at Doncaster Rovers followed, Walling then going on to play for Northwich Victoria, Cambridge United, Gainsborough Trinity and Nuneaton.
Also a St Kitts and Nevis International, Walling has for many years run his own football academy in Lincoln - Deano's Pro Soccer Academy.
