Kai Nugent won the battle of the Carlisle United loanees as Annan Athletic tasted derby victory over Queen of the South.

Nugent was a substitute for Peter Murphy’s side against a Queens team for whom Max Kilsby started in defence.

But it proved a good day for Murphy’s men, who prevailed 2-1 at Galabank.

Nugent came off the bench in the 69th minute as Annan led through goals from Tommy Goss and ex-Carlisle youth defender Matty Douglas.

Former Blues striker Gavin Reilly pulled one back for Queens but Annan secured the points.

Defender Kilsby, on his fifth Queens outing, was substituted in the 62nd minute after being booked against his previous loan club, while midfielder Nugent clocked up his 19th appearance for Murphy’s men.

Improving Annan remain second bottom of Scottish League One but have won four of their last eight games, and are now just four points behind Marvin Bartley’s third-bottom Queens, who are winless in six.

Also on the loan front, there were starts for all three of Workington Reds’ United youth team loanees on Saturday.

Jake Allan, Aran Fitzpatrick and Sam Hetherington were in Danny Grainger’s side for the home clash with Hyde United in the Northern Premier League Premier Division.

Fitzpatrick played the full game while Allan was replaced in the 64th minute and Hetherington the 77th.

Reds fell to a 1-0 defeat with ex-Carlisle man Lewis Alessandra hitting Hyde’s goal, Manasse Mampala a second-half sub for the visitors at Borough Park.

A number of ex-United men were in the thick of the weekend action, meanwhile.

In NPL East, Connor Thomson struck the winner for Ashington in their 3-2 victory at Consett.

And in the same division, Liam Noble’s first goal for Hebburn Town featured in a 4-0 home win over Sheffield FC.
