Cumbria gained its latest Premier League player on Saturday as Joe White made his Newcastle United debut.

The Carlisle-born midfielder came on for the Magpies in the closing stages of their 2-2 draw with AFC Bournemouth.

It was a first senior appearance for the club with White having come through Newcastle's ranks over several years.

The 21-year-old replaced Lewis Miley in the 89th minute in front of 52,224 fans at St James' Park.

And White was on the pitch for a dramatic finale as Matt Ritchie scored in the last minute to earn Eddie Howe's side a point.

Manager Howe later said White, who recently returned from a League Two loan spell at Crewe Alexandra, fully deserved his maiden top-flight outing.

"He's been really good since coming back," Howe told the BBC of the player who is the grandson of the former Carlisle United player, coach and physio and Workington Reds manager Peter Hampton.

"I've been really pleased with more maturity from him.

"His performances in training have been very good. He's not getting on the pitch for any reason other than the fact he's training well and he deserves to be there."

White, who was on Carlisle's youth books before moving to Newcastle, is getting his chance on the first-team scene after three lower-league loan spells.

The former England Under-18 international had stints with Hartlepool United and Exeter City in previous seasons and impressed at Crewe in the first half of the current campaign.

Crewe wanted to bring the skilful midfielder back for the rest of the campaign but an injury crisis at Newcastle led Howe to promote White into his first-team squad.

He has been on the bench in recent weeks ahead of Saturday's milestone appearance.

Dominic Solanke put Bournemouth ahead with Anthony Gordon's penalty levelling things for Newcastle. Antoine Semenyo restored the Cherries' advantage before Ritchie's close-range equaliser.
