League One strugglers Port Vale have turned to Darren Moore to turn their fortunes around.

The Valiants have today unveiled the ex-West Bromwich Albion, Doncaster Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Huddersfield Town boss as their new manager.

Moore, 49, has been handed a five-and-a-half year contract at Vale Park.

His immediate task will be to avert the risk of relegation at the third tier's fourth-bottom club.

Moore succeeds Andy Crosby at the helm of a side in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Port Vale's director of football David Flitcroft said Moore was their top target, feeling he can "galvanise and energise the club."

"Following extensive conversations, it’s clear to the board that he has a plan of how he wants to lead the club from the very front and understands the importance of successes both on and off the pitch," added Flitcroft in a club statement.

“He personifies every quality that we look for as a representative of Port Vale FC as well as possessing the management and leadership qualities that are so highly sought-after in any football club’s manager.

“I firmly believe that the appointment of Darren is an exciting one for the club and I am absolutely delighted to welcome him to Vale Park.”

Moore, who has made a quick return to management after his Huddersfield sacking two weeks ago, claimed his and his new club's aims were "perfectly aligned."

“Our immediate aim is securing the club’s League One status between now and the end of this season whilst putting the foundations in place to create a clear footballing identity," he added.

“The contract is a long-term commitment from both myself and Port Vale FC; it’s a testament to the long-term vision of the club and a vision that we as a collective from myself, the supporters, the club staff and the players are all striving towards."

Vale sit 11 points above bottom side Carlisle in the scramble for survival. Crosby's side defeated Paul Simpson's Blues 1-0 at Vale Park in August before losing 2-1 at Brunton Park on New Year's Day.

They are winless in six ahead of Tuesday night's game against Peterborough United.
