One of Carlisle United's relegation rivals have sold a striker to a promotion-chasing club in League One.

Cheltenham Town, who were due to take on the Blues this weekend, have allowed Will Goodwin to join Oxford United.

Goodwin, who has scored six goals this season, has left Whaddon Road for an undisclosed fee which some reports have claimed is around the £400,000 mark.

Cheltenham, who are one place and three points above Carlisle in the drop zone, have pledged to bring in players before the end of the transfer window.

"Will leaves the club with our best wishes and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours," Cheltenham boss Darrell Clarke told the club website after the ex-Stoke City man's move was confirmed.

"He has progressed well during my time here but the offer we received from Oxford was one we felt was a great deal for the club.

"We continue our focus on improving performances with our squad on the pitch and improving it with a positive transfer window."

The move means 21-year-old Goodwin has swapped the third tier's 22nd-placed club for a side chasing promotion in sixth.

“Will is an outstanding talent who is capable of making a big contribution to this club. We’re looking forward to working with him," said Oxford boss Des Buckingham.
