Carlisle United fans gave us their views on social media platform X after the 2-1 defeat at Barnsley - here's a selection of their comments.

For battling, effort 10/10. However, if we can't string more than two passes together or just hack the ball away, we will hand games to the opposition to press us and dominate the ball. It is what it is. (@BruceVander)

Better, but have to get a point there. Not the first time we’ve been punished for missing chances and they were always going to improve. New signings settling in so some positives, but we’re running out of time. If we get beat on Saturday we’re going to have too much to do. (@lewisrids3)

Harsh defeat. Harsh situation. Better display. The Armstrong goal will do him good. (@carlisl9125)

Tough to take, very soft penalty but if we take our chances that pen means nothing. Still feel we need to strengthen up top. Got to take the positives out of that and push on! (@fish_blues)

Work rate and intensity was the best it’s been all season, unfortunately their first goal showed the difference between the top end of the table and the bottom. I knew as soon as we missed the early chances, it would come back to bite us. (@philipscott20)

Pride. A really, really good performance, if not result. Shocker by the ref. The boys should believe they can go and win at Cheltenham. New signings will improve with game time UTB (@AndyMortonPark)

Better performance, much more fight than recently. However long and short of it is we missed sitters and had 4 opportunities to clear before the joke of a pen. They were awful but they took their only 2 opportunities. That’s why we are 2nd bottom. (@parkinsonross)

Same for the majority of the year. Not clinical enough up top, undone by quality at other end, and a useless ref costing us. Still got hope we can survive, but luck needs turning. (@WindersMurphy)

Great effort b y the lads. Really high press was so effective. Armstrong showed his worth and took his goal really well. He bullied them all game. Nice to see for a change. Butterworth although missed a hattrick of chances was a constant pain!! (@spendercufc)

Much improved but you have to take your chances and you have to retain the ball better. Overplaying cost us at times. First half performance right up there though and need to take that into Cheltenham. (@mattselliott)

Miles better overall but we still lack the quality to take chances (would anyone in our squad have scored a goal like Devante Cole?) & to retain possession of the ball. pressure built on us because we couldn’t clear the ball properly & kept giving it back to Barnsley. (@JRBulman)

Much improved but ultimately no points which is frustrating. Simmo got his tactics bang on, high press, won the ball high and on another day should have been 3-0 up in 10 minutes. New signings make us stronger, Neal was fantastic and Armstrong leads the line really well. (@BenJoseph0157)

Much improved especially on Oxford. High press and balls into corners worked first half. Neal and Armstrong definitely improvements. Still susceptible to direct running out of defence once press broken - huge gap to back line - 2nd goal from this. Needs sitting CDM to stop. (@McCarlisle1)

Genuinely pleased with the performance. Play like that for the next [18] games and we'll be a League 1 side next term. (@buzzisbackCUFC)

All about taking chances and we didn’t but they did (@hatkinson5527)

Lots of positives. Good to see us start on the front foot. Hunts back in provides stability to defence. Armstrong battles for everything. However, energy & focus faded 2nd half. McCalmont needed to come off, he was knackered after a good display. More subs might've helped. #utb (@EarnThtDanegeld)

Tactical superiority in the first half should have resulted in a 2 or 3 goal lead. The fact that it didn't, shows why we are where we are. Fans must help the players keep their heads up in the remainder of the season as relegation becomes inevitable. Roll on winning again in L2! (@MikeEwins)

Tough one to take. Great fight and desire from the boys, particularly first half and really should’ve been at least 0-2 up HT. Punished by one quality play and a dodgy pen, gutted. (@havenmarra)

I'm still in shock . How that wasn't buried in first half is testament to how we play sometimes. It's a million miles an hour stuff ALL the time, no composure and no real quality. Where is Owen Moxon? (@mincerayder)

Best performance of the season, should have won this match 3-1. With Jake Young in the team I think he would have put those chances away (@GeoffRo39583097)
