Cumbrian badminton star Lauren Smith and partner Marcus Ellis defeated their Thai opponents to reach the last 16 of the India Open.

Smith and Ellis saw off the challenge of Ruttanapak Oupthong and Jhenicha Sudjaipraparat in their first round contest.

The English pair won two closely-fought games to set up a second round meeting with the Chinese fourth seeds.

Smith and Ellis took the first game 21-19 before coming on top 21-18 in the second game to seal victory in New Delhi.

They now face a tough assignment in their bid to make further progress.

Next up on Thursday is a clash with Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping. The latter won mixed doubles gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games and both Feng and Huang won multiple titles last year. They are ranked fourth in the world.

The competition in India is a second in quick succession for Smith and Ellis after they were involved in the Malaysia Open last week.

There, they went out in the first round after a narrow three-game defeat to Indonesian pair Dejan Ferdinansyah and Gloria Widjaja - who lost to Smith and Ellis' upcoming Chinese opponents in India.
