Fans of Carlisle United and Barnsley will come together tonight to salute a "fantastic football man" in David Wilkes.

The much-missed former Blues youth coach, who died last summer aged 59, will be the subject of applause at Oakwell in the 59th minute of this evening's League One game.

Wilkes started his playing career with home-town club Barnsley before going on to establish a hugely respected and successful coaching career at Carlisle.

The man who nurtured the careers of generations of young players at Brunton Park will be celebrated tonight.

Carlisle manager Paul Simpson says it is right that Wilkes is remembered and acknowledged this evening.

"Football isn't life and death," he said, "and look at the situation at Bolton on Saturday where somebody very sadly died after having a heart attack [supporter Iain Purslow, who it was announced on Sunday had passed away].

"You have to think about those sorts of things.

"So I really hope that everybody does pay their respects to a fantastic football man in Dave Wilkes. And we've got to make sure that we put on a performance that's worthy of it as well."

Members of Wilkes' family are due to be at tonight's game as fans pay their respects.

It is the first meeting of Barnsley and Carlisle at first-team level since the tragic news of his passing last June.

The two clubs also met this season in the FA Youth Cup at Brunton Park, where a minute's applause was held in Wilkes' memory before the game.
