Paul Simpson will step up Carlisle United’s efforts on two more potential signings this week.

The Blues manager says he will stop at nothing in his attempts to improve his squad further.

Carlisle sealed three signings last week but Simpson wants more reinforcements in his attempt to pull the Blues out of serious League One relegation trouble.

After bringing in Luke Armstrong, Harrison Neal and Seán Grehan, Simpson is in discussions over more players.

“There’s a couple that we’re trying to do,” Simpson told the News & Star.

“Then we’ll reassess it from that point and see where we are.”

United’s manager said he had been holding discussions even whilst travelling to Exeter City the day before Saturday’s 2-1 defeat.

That game saw Armstrong and Neal make their debuts while Grehan travelled with the squad.

“I want some more, definitely,” added Simpson of his January transfer window efforts.

“So we’re going to keep working.

“On Friday, travelling down, I was still trying to do things, then [Saturday] was about the game so there weren’t any conversations going on.

“But we’ll pick that up again and we’ve just got to wait and see. We are working to try and improve this group of players and we’ll continue to do it.”

Carlisle’s defeat in Devon left them six points adrift of the third-tier safety line with 20 games to go.

Simpson is keen to bring in another senior goalkeeper, despite the solid form of young Cumbrian Gabe Breeze, as well as more outfield reinforcements.

“I’ll say it again, the league table doesn’t tell lies – we are where we are because that’s the sort of performances and results that we’re giving out,” added the Blues boss.

“We’ve got to dig deep, we’ve got to continue to work hard, and maybe even work smarter and hope we can get some faces in that are going to help us.”
